“Painting with a Camera”

"Painting with a Camera" was an exhibition held at The Fine Arts Gallery in Gibraltar, of photographic images by local artists Willa Vasquez and Paul Cosquieri. The exhibition was held from Wednesday 18th October 2006 through to the 31st October 2006.

The idea for such a unique exhibition came about during one of the many art discussions or "tertulias" held during the weekly Life Drawing sessions held at the Fine Arts gallery. We had talked about how photography or the camera can be as good a tool for a painter as can be a pencil or brush. Hence and also because neither of us consider ourselves professional photographers we named the exhibition "Painting with a Camera", said Paul Cosquieri.

The exhibition juxtaposes two contrasting styles and perception of "Beauty" from two totally different painters who have switched their paint brushes for a camera. In the case of Willa Vasquez the images are primarily from her trip to the Venice carnival and represents some beautiful images of Venetian masks and scenery. In some cases Willa has enhanced her images digitally giving them an even more "personal touch".

Paul Cosquieri's work consists of almost totally abstract images based on studies of grafiti and bill boards from cities such as Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid, Florence and London. His images are rich in colour, texture and abstract composition. None of the photos have been digitally retouched in any way nor have they been cropped. Paul simply printed what his lens had captured.
